Parents Make a Difference
On
Wednesday, February 18, a group of Pacifica School District parents
and children traveled to Sacramento to personally deliver the results
of the district wide letter writing campaign, and meet with state
officials to discuss the impact of budget cuts and inequity in
education financing on our district. The
letter writing campaign at Cabrillo contributed 163 letters - the
bulk of the letters that were delivered.
Copies of the letters were emailed to 5 other representatives and
mailed to President Obama.
Our
voices are being heard. Mr. Hill has agreed to hold a town
meeting in Pacifica at the Community Center (10:00 AM, 14 March) to
discuss any issues, educational funding included, that affect his
constituency. This, in part, is due to the on-going letter
writing and phone campaign to change equity in educational funding.
From
Assemblyman Hill's March Newsletter -
"Several
Pacifica School District students and students-to-be, along with
their parents recently traveled to Sacramento to voice their concerns
about the on-going substantial cuts to public education funding with
their state elected representatives. The
students delivered letters from members of the Pacifica community to
the offices of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Senator Leland
Yee. They also met with Assemblymember Jerry Hill, who
personally accepted their letters and discussed budget concerns with
the students."
Affecting
change takes time, vigilance, participation and constant noise.
Nothing happens of you don’t make yourself heard.
Thank
you to everyone who wrote letters, asked questions and attended
presentations. Special thanks to those who set-up and manned
the tables: Valerie Ryder, Tina Steinberg, Lynn Mullen, Ling-Fong
Chung, Laurie Vreeland, Janine Galligani and Michele Leal.
Sincerely,
Paul Meadow and Karen Dwyer-Meadow
